Ok, so maybe not as a *direct* cause....
If you currently don't suffer from Low Back Pain and decide to take up smoking tomorrow - you're not going to suddenly develop pain.
HOWEVER, there is a strong link between smoking & back pain...
It is widely documented and acknowledged that smoking causes tissue damage around the body. This tissue damage can exacerbate the pain from injury and prevent or slow down the body's healing process, therefore prolonging any form of low back injury.
If you are a smoker who has previously, or is currently suffering from Low Back Pain - continuing to smoke may be putting you at *increased* risk of further bouts of pain (remember - having back pain previously is pretty much the no.1 risk factor for developing back pain again in the future), or impeding the healing process from current back pain.
Might be worth notching that one up as another reason to quit..
