High Gear vs. Low Gear Push Off

When we move efficiently, we are able to move in a way that creates the desired outcome without putting extra pressure on joints and muscles and without using up more energy than necessary. This includes when we walk.

HIGH GEAR Push Off ✔️ We are able to roll evenly through the foot with even weight distribution ✔️ Allows for optimal push off from big toe ✔️ Foot is in a stable, rigid, locked position allowing for a stable foundation to push off from and decreasing the risk of injury ✔️ Allows for toe/forefoot splay increasing surface contact with the ground for better balance

LOW GEAR Push Off ❌ Uneven weight distribution across the foot results in uneven loading of joints, possibly leading to pain and compensatory movement patterns ❌ Increased risk of injury from lack of stability and uneven joint loading ❌ Foot is in an unstable position ❌ No toe/forefoot splay and smaller surface area for contact, decreasing stability and increasing the risk of falls

Common causes of Low Gear Push Off include: 👣 Limited big toe mobility 👣 Limited first ray mobility 👣 Abducted gait (toes turned out) 👣 Limited ankle mobility 👣 Tight calves

Research has also shown that barefoot training can increase speed, power and agility in athletes, as well as decreasing injury risk and improving pain and movement in every day situations.
